Paediatric Medicine is a specialty which involves the assessment and management of a range of health issues in children.
This can include acute illnesses which may need an urgent review and possible referral to the emergency centre or hospital.
In many instances, however, an urgent referral is not needed, and yet the problems can be significant and require a non-urgent paediatric assessment.
If your child is acutely unwell then it is a good idea to contact your GP or attend your local emergency care centre where most common childhood conditions can be initially managed.
If the treating clinician requires further advice they can contact the on-call paediatric service as the child may need a further acute review at the hospital.
If your child is not acutely unwell and yet there are concerns you have about their health and well-being, there is a range of sources to help you.
Your primary care team including GP, practice nurse or midwife are well trained in helping you, and they may consider a referral for a paediatric opinion, via the hospital's outpatient service or a private consultation.
